It seems like predictive analytics gets all the attention these days but generally speaking, it requires either a Data Scientist or a machine learning algorithm operating on lots of event data, in order to predict the all-important dimension of time, at least to any degree of useful certainty. Enter prognostic analytics. In a closed system of uniform conditions, prognostic analytics can make better predictions about the “when”. In this episode of the IoT Business Show I speak with Moritz von Plate about how the characteristics of this older-school stats make it very well suited for predictive maintenance in Industrial IoT.

When we buy an IoT Product for our home or our business, the advice is the same: read the fine print. There are plenty of technical obstacles that can be thrown in your way to stop you from having complete control over your data but sometimes the devil is in the details and these contractual details can have a major effect on your business. In this episode of the IoT Business Show, I speak with Johannes Ernst about the IoT Overloads and the upcoming data showdown.

An Internet, or Internet of Things product is complex. In fact, it’s not a product at all but a nested system of systems. The shear number of technology and business issues to consider at the start can overwhelm even the best trained and most experienced manager. In this episode of the IoT Business Show I speak with Daniel Elizalde about his IoT Decision Framework and how to use it to tame even the most complex of Internet products.

They say data is the new oil. Well if that’s the case, then like oil, crude data must be refined and packaged to make it useful and consumable. If you believe, like I believe, that all incremental value from an Internet product comes from transforming its data into useful information, then external sources of data, when combined with internal data, can become very valuable, indeed. In this episode of the IoT Business Show I speak with David Knight about third-party data markets and syndicates.

It takes a lot, and I mean a lot, to get me to download yet another app on my phone, especially one that’s going to try to sell me something… but, I’m open to Retail-IoT tech. I’m not much of a physical shopper, probably because I find the whole shopping experience so dreary, but this so called offline-online convergence within retail has piqued my interest. In this episode of the IoT Business Show I speak with Oleg Puzanov about proximity marketing and where it’s headed with IoT.

We all know, whether from experience or just intuitively, that bolting security on an IoT product after much of the development has been completed is a total rookie mistake, and a recipe for disaster. Yet this still happens. By crowdfunded startups who don’t mention security in their videos, to internal teams in larger enterprises who also emphasise the bling in order to get their project greenlit from within. In this episode of the IoT Business Show I speak with Chris Romeo about the Security Development Lifecycle, the polar opposite to the bolt-on, that’s been successfully used in IT security for years.

You’ve heard of the KISS principle, right? Keep it Simple Stupid… Well, I don’t think many consumer smart product makers have. Maybe it’s just where we are in the IoT evolutionary cycle but often they take a perfectly fine, and simple, product and heap on to it a lot of complexity when making it smart. Even worst, this complexity often adds very little incremental value.

The smart home or connected home makes life good. Comfortable. Reminiscent of the Jetson’s in many ways. But business models aside, today’s big question, at least for me, is if it really is a DIY (do it yourself) market as it’s currently being betrayed. Not so easy to install. Not so easy to repair, so is it better to be handled by the professionals (installers, integrators, service providers)? You can paint your house but do you want to when professionals can be hired?
